Advent 2021
Advent 2021
Dear Parish Family and Generous Supporters,
As we come to the end of our second term of the 2021-22 school year, I wanted to take a moment to catch you up on our progress this autumn. The Lord has been doing great work in Good Shepherd School, and I wanted to share that with you all.
As many of you know, we expanded our program from the two afternoons a week that we offered in Lent & Easter terms to four afternoons a week in Michaelmas and All Saints terms. This has been working well, as it has given our students more of a chance to not only learn, but to connect with each other and grow in community. Our children are growing more in both the Spirit of the Lord and in the spirit of fellowship as they have more opportunity to learn together.
Our classes this autumn have been quite well received. Both Upper School (12+) and Lower School (6-11) students have been able to study Koine Greek, choir, world geography, and art, this last being provided by our first teacher from outside the parish, Ms. Maria Todd. This addition of an art program for several terms has not only allowed the students to learn new methods for sharing their love of the Lord, but to spread that love by publicly exhibiting their work at the non-profit City of the World Gallery in Las Vegas in their student area. Between terms this autumn, the students had the opportunity to visit this gallery on a field trip. We thank Ms. Todd in facilitating these for us, and we look forward to working with her in Epiphany Term.
In addition to the subjects studied by all, each school had its own subjects of interest to study this autumn. Lower School students have been doing an in-depth study of the saints, a biology class, and a United States Geography course. Upper School has continued to study Christian apologetics, as well as the history of science and an in-depth class on America’s founders and founding documents.
Though we have on offer a program to help those in need of homeschooling assistance, we have not yet had anyone request it. However, we will continue to offer this in the new year, for those who, due to work or other conflicts, could not homeschool themselves. We are blessed to have the resources to offer this program, including our new library, which will be dedicated to the memory of our own Ann Marie Snyder, a beloved teacher herself. The parish and our generous donors have provided the ability to create a library and have curriculum at the ready for whomever the Lord sends for us to help, and we are eternally grateful.
Currently, our student body consists of nine full time and two part time students. We are currently offering our program to more students through radio and online advertising. Our teaching staff consists of four parish volunteer teachers, one parish staff member, and one teacher from outside the parish, as well as several regular volunteer assistants. Our volunteers have been the backbone of our program; we could not run this without them. We are always looking for more people who can help us on site. Please keep both our students and our staff in your daily prayers.
The spiritual growth of our student body was exhibited as the students ministered to the congregation in October at the end of Michaelmas Term by leading the 11 AM worship service and sharing in musical ministry. At the end of All Saints Term, they will be ministering to us again by leading the Advent Lessons and Carols Service on Sunday evening, December 12th.
The Lord has been faithful to us in these last two terms; may we continue to be faithful to Him going forward! Please continue to pray for this ministry as we enter into the next calendar year. We have committed ourselves to three terms of classes – Epiphany, Lent, and Easter – and the continued spiritual and academic formation of our students. Please pray for the growth of our parish, and for whatever space the Lord has in mind for us as we continue His ministries for His people and His children.
As always, thank-you for your continued prayers, support, and generosity. We are blessed by you.
Blessed Advent and Christmas,
Margaret Douglass
